Japan’s phone code is the telephone country code that is used for phone communications when a call is placed from outside of the country.

Japan’s Country Code is +81

Japan’s country code is +81. The country code is necessary only when dialing a phone number to make a telephone call from another country. International callers who wish to dial a telephone number in Japan should dial Japan’s telephone country code (+81) before the national telephone number preceded by area code.

All national phone numbers in Japan are generally nine digits long, including the area code – aa-bbb-bbbb, with aa being the area code. Follow these easy steps to dial a phone number in Japan using the country code:

Step 1. Enter your country’s exit code on your phone. If you are calling from Europe please enter the 00 (or “+” sign if calling from a mobile device) or 011 if calling from the United States. American callers use the “011” exit code for all international call, including Japan.

Step 2. Dial 81, Japan’s country code.

Step 3. Then enter Japan’s area code. Don’t use the trunk code “0” when calling from outside Japan.

Step 4. Right after the area code, dial the national phone number you wish to call in Japan.

When calling from Europe: 00 81 aa bbb bbbb (or +81 aa bbb bbbb from a mobile device)
When calling from the United States: 011 81 aa bbb bbbb

Japan’s area codes are one to five digit long codes that are used for long-distance calling inside the country. Here are some Japan’s area codes:

If you wish to dial a phone number with these area codes from outside Japan, you would have to dial first the exit code, then Japan’s country code 81. 

For example, if you want to dial a phone number in Kyoto, this would be an example of a phone number: +81 75 bbb bbbb or 0081 75 bbb bbbb, and 011 81 75 bbb bbbb if calling from the United States.

Japan’s mobile phone numbers are operated by the four largest local mobile phone companies – NTT docomo, au by KDDI, Softbank and Rakuten Mobile.

The mobile phone codes in Japan are 70, 80 and 90. When dialing a mobile phone number from outside of the country, first you need to dial the exit code (for example, “011” or “+” sign if calling from the United States), then Japan’s country code “81”, plus the ten digit phone number including mobile code “70”, “80” or “90”.

For example, enter 011 81 90 bbbb bbbb or +81 90 bbbb bbbb if calling from the United States.
