Australia’s phone code is the telephone country code that is used for phone communications when a call is placed from outside of the country.

Australia’s Country Code is +61

Australia’s country code is +61. The country code is necessary only when dialing a phone number to make a telephone call from another country. International callers who wish to dial a telephone number in Australia should dial Australia’s telephone country code (+61) before the eight digits national telephone number preceded by area code. Do not enter the trunk code “0” when calling from overseas.

All national phone numbers in Australia are ten digits long – 0a-bbbb-bbbb : the trunk code “0”, plus the area code (2,3, 7, or 8 and 4 for a mobile number), followed by the eight digit local number. Always delete the trunk code “0” when calling from overseas. Use the trunk code along with area code only while calling within Australia.

Follow these easy steps to dial a phone number in Australia using the country code:

Step 1. Enter your country’s exit code on your phone. If you are calling from Europe please enter the 00 (or + sign if calling from a mobile device) or 011 if calling from the United States. American callers use the “011” exit code for all international call, including Australia.

Step 2. Dial 61, Australia’s country code.

Step 3. Then enter Australia’s area code, or 4 if you are calling a mobile. Don’t use the trunk code “0” when calling from outside of the country.

Step 4. Right after the area code, dial the 8 digit national phone number you wish to call in Australia.

Australia’s area codes are two digits long codes that are used for long-distance calling inside the country. Please do not enter the trunk “0” when calling overseas. Here are Australia’s area codes:

If you wish to dial a phone number with these area codes from outside Australia, you would have to dial first the exit code, then Australian country code 61. 

For example, if you want to dial a phone number in Central East, this would be an example of a phone number: +61 2 bbbb bbbb or 0061 2 bbbb bbbb, and 011 61 2 bbbb bbbb if calling from the United States.

Australian mobile phone numbers are operated by the three largest local mobile phone companies – Telstra, Vodafone and Optus.

The mobile phone codes in Australia are 04 and 05 (note: no numbers with “05” have been introduced so far). When dialing a mobile phone number from outside of the country, first you need to dial the exit code (for example, “011” or “+” sign if calling from the United States), then Australia’s country code “61”, plus the phone number including mobile code “4”, but without the digit “0” (zero).
